Fire resistance: assemblies and doors

ISO 834

ISO 834, Fire-resistance tests — Elements of building construction (Parts 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9)

ISO 834 is the international fire resistance test used by many national building codes outside North America and Europe, and the basis of China's GB/T 9978. Its fire curve is identical to EN 1363-1.

Within CNAS accreditation ISO 834-1 (2025 edition), -5, -6, -8 and -9 are within our CNAS scope, excluding load-bearing walls and columns. ISO 3008-1:2025 (doors and shutters) is also in scope.

Parts within our scope

PartElement
ISO 834-1General requirements and the standard fire curve
ISO/TR 834-3Commentary on test method and application of data
ISO 834-5Loadbearing horizontal separating elements (floors)
ISO 834-6Beams
ISO 834-8Non-loadbearing vertical separating elements (walls, partitions)
ISO 834-9Non-loadbearing ceiling elements
ISO 3008-1Doors and shutters

Fire curve and criteria

The standard curve is T = 345 log₁₀(8t + 1) + 20. Elements are judged on load-bearing capacity, integrity and insulation, in the same way as the EN 1363 family. Our CNAS accreditation is recognised under the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement, which many national authorities accept.

Frequently asked questions

Which markets accept ISO 834 reports?

Many countries in the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America reference ISO 834 or a national standard based on it. Check the local regulation and whether a report from an ILAC-recognised laboratory is accepted.
