Thermal management and thermal runaway research

Joint research with Tongji University on how thermal runaway starts and spreads, and how thermal management, barriers and enclosure design can stop it — supported by our 20 MW indoor fire hall co-built with Tongji.

Thermal management and thermal runaway research

What we research

  • Propagation mechanisms: how heat and vent gas move from a failing cell to its neighbours, inside modules, racks and containers.
  • Thermal management: how cooling design, spacing and thermal barriers change the onset and spread of thermal runaway.
  • Passive fire protection: performance of insulation, barrier and enclosure materials under prolonged fire exposure.
  • Large-scale fire behaviour: heat release and fire spread of full systems, and how well they can be predicted by simulation.

With Tongji University

Our 20 MW indoor large-scale fire hall in Jiading was co-built with Tongji University. It gives research projects full-scale, instrumented fire tests under controlled indoor conditions, independent of weather.

Why it matters to you

Research is how we stay ahead of the standards. Many test requirements — large-scale fire tests, open-door burns, deflagration testing — started as research questions. Clients who work with us on development learn what will pass before they commit to a certification test.

Frequently asked questions

Can we commission a research project?

Yes. Typical projects compare barrier materials, cooling strategies or module layouts under controlled thermal runaway, combining instrumented tests with simulation. Results can stay confidential to you.
