The Euroclass system
EN 13501-1 classifies construction products by how much they contribute to a developing fire:
| Class | Typical tests |
|---|---|
| A1 | EN ISO 1182, EN ISO 1716 |
| A2 | EN ISO 1182 or EN ISO 1716, plus EN 13823 |
| B, C, D | EN 13823 and EN ISO 11925-2 |
| E | EN ISO 11925-2 |
| F | No performance determined |
Additional classes describe smoke production (s1, s2, s3) and flaming droplets (d0, d1, d2), both taken from the SBI test.
The Single Burning Item test
Two wings of the product form a corner, 1.5 m high, exposed to a 30 kW propane burner for 20 minutes. Oxygen consumption calorimetry and smoke measurement in the exhaust duct give:
- FIGRA — fire growth rate index;
- THR600s — total heat released in the first 600 s;
- SMOGRA and TSP600s — smoke growth rate and total smoke production;
- LFS — whether flames spread to the edge of the long wing;
- flaming droplets and particles.
Other reaction-to-fire tests in our scope
UL 94 (plastics; horizontal, 20 mm vertical and thin-material tests), IEC 60332-1-2 and -1-3 (single cable flame spread), EN 60695-11-10 (50 W flame), UL 2043 (products installed in air-handling spaces), and IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 1 (non-combustibility of marine materials).
Frequently asked questions
Which tests do I need for Euroclass B-s1,d0?
EN 13823 (SBI) and EN ISO 11925-2 (single-flame source, 30 s exposure). The SBI result gives B, the smoke class s1 and the droplet class d0.
Which tests do I need for A1 or A2?
A1: EN ISO 1182 (non-combustibility) and EN ISO 1716 (gross heat of combustion). A2: EN ISO 1182 or EN ISO 1716, plus EN 13823.
Are floorings tested in the SBI?
No. Floorings are classified with EN ISO 9239-1 (radiant panel) and EN ISO 11925-2, giving classes A1fl to Ffl.
